Executive Vice President – Systems Media Group
Mr. Thompson recently joined S4 Inc. to lead its systems and media support division working directly with governmental and private entities in high-risk and crises environments. His team works with local, state, federal and private entities developing outreach strategies to address specific situations.
Immediately prior, Mr. Thompson was the Director of External Affairs for the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In this role he oversaw all elements of communications and outreach for the agency including public affairs, community affairs, legislative, international and intergovernmental affairs, as well as all Web and social media communications.
Mr. Thompson was previously Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs responsible for the design, development and oversight of communications planning for the Department’s Iraq and Global War on Terror communications. He worked closely with the strategic communications assets of the Department including the Information Operations, Psychological Operations and Legislative Affairs entities. He served as direct liaison with the Under Secretaries and Assistant Secretaries of Defense, and senior-most officials of the military departments and defense agencies. He also worked closely with communication leaders at the White House, Department of State, the National Security Council, and other relevant departments and agencies concerning mission-related matters. In this and prior roles, Mr. Thompson traveled to Iraq more than a dozen times, and numerous other middle-east and Asian countries. Prior to this assignment, Mr. Thompson served in the Coalition Provisional Authority a senior advisor for communications and its successor organization the Defense Reconstruction Support Office for Iraq and Afghanistan affairs where e was involved with all interagency working groups on these issues, and participated in regular briefings and presentations to the senior leadership of the Department of Defense and other executive agencies, as well as to the White House.
Mr. Thompson has held senior positions with leading marketing, advertising and communications firms specializing in strategic planning and communications. His clients have included several Fortune 100 companies and trade groups.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, is married and lives in northern Virginia.
